SARAFI'S RESIDENCE AT IRVINE SHADY CANYON
IRVINE, CA

Client : MR. and MRS. Sarafi 
Subject property: Located in shady Canyon, Irvine, CA, a residence to be located on an approximate half of an acre hill crust site over view the Spectrum of Irvine.

Program:
The client desired an expansion of their current residence to a 8,000 sq ft with a three car garage. The house to include a swimming pool to over look the spectrum. The Clients stressed the view to the spectrum as the important view to the city where they indicated that is the reason of buying the lot. The Irvine company identified the styles permitted in Shady canyon, where the Client chosen Andalusian style to be the Architecture of choice. 
Other program criteria:
- Entry way to be elevated
- Utilizing a basement however, must have a sun exposure.
- Theater room, and health gym.
- Cal Room to be located in front of the house for short visits, where a visitor don’t need to be in the house.
- Each floor to include at least one bedroom.
- Possible gender segregation at function with ability to reunite depending on the future function.
- Irvine company mandated design restrains: second floor shall not exceed a certain percentage of the first floor. The Max high of top plate 9’ and any cathedral ceiling shall not exceed 20’. Light wells count on the exterior of the house.
Design approach:
The design to create a series of court yards that lead visitors to all areas of the house. Yet, a clear definition between privet and public spaces. The design of a U shaped mass was ideal to permit light into the basement court yard, permit the views on two sides on of the master bed room, allow for clear definition between privet and public access and spaces. The master bedroom to over see the entire house court yards and front views, and back yard. The west side of the house shall be public access. Where public access means those whom are not immediate family. The east side to be privet housing the access from the garage to bedrooms. The south side, where the pool to be located has the circulation that permit such function to be accessed by both privet and public and yet to access the basement as well. The court yard that are split into two level (level of entry, and basement level) plays an important parts in bringing the house together in unity, but yet separated. It was designed as a living space and life of it’s own rather than a void created by the means of the mass. In short the mass of the house was created by the void of the court yard is to be better said here. The circulation is very carefully design to adhere to the style inherited by the style requested as well as by the clients program. The circulation take the function that client will use to entertain his gussets. 
The Building Envelop
The envelop had to utilize the function of the building to bring the utilization to the out side. The arches and columns where placed to explain the circulation behavior and patterns as if it signs with arrows. The entry way was created with a great arch that will house two doors. A large door for guest of great statue and smaller door for other, where such is customary by the historical culture that the house style adheres to. The arches where rationally spaced to either open or close views through them; as necessary to obtain privacy or open view as per the viewer location and angle of view.
