Program

A hillside lot enjoys many elevation changes in the back yard. The single-family lot had a pre-existing two story with a split level first floor. The Client desired his second-floor front large balcony to be built as an addition to enlarge the house. The second floor to be modified to include the living room. The client preferred a contemporary style. The lot was perceived to be a complete circle where the side yard is significantly large and create it own outdoor living. The Client was made aware of such as it will be part of the program. The client indicated that him and his wife entertain many people in the outdoor area of the house. During the project design phase, the owner requested landscaping to be included as an expansion to the scope of work. A Landscape architect was to be associated with to complete the task. 

Design Approach

The design suggested an open plan from the second floor to the first to continue the pre-existing cathedral ceiling to the second floor. The bedrooms were pushed over the garage in place of the large balcony. The façade of the house is to be resurfaced with wood veneer and smooth white stucco to rap around the house. The garage level was to have an addition to create a tower housing storage at garage level and bath on the top. This Tower to separate between the new front balcony and side balcony. The rear of house to have a wood veneer furring wall as a continuation to the new style and to create an eave over the rear patio door. New trellis design at the back-yard seating created from the retaining wall to create an opportunity for lower level outdoor function area. A new front door approach was devised through changing the layout of the path to the house with new retaining walls and planters. Such create a front area for social gathering. An association with a landscape architect was created to continue the task of modifying the landscape to the new outdoor objective.
